Photograph Notes: The sightseers are standing on the terrace where the great bombard 'Mons Meg' is displayed. Access to the citadel of the mediaeval castle was by a long flight of stairs just inside the Portcullis Gate, the roof of which can be seen on the far left. The curtain wall on the left, displaying the heraldic panel, follows the natural line of the rock and delineates the medieval site. The photograph is taken from the broad cobbled roadway, created in the 15thC reign of James III to provide a more gradual main approach to facilitate easier transportation of the ox-drawn royal artillery train in and out of the Castle. On 17th August 1513, in the reign of James IV, five cannon were taken from the Castle on the campaign that ended disastrously at Flodden. Since descending the steep West Bow was out of the question, the guns were drawn down the High Street to be parked overnight at the Netherbow Port under a guard of 12 men. Next morning they were hauled up the Pleasance and along the old Dalkeith road, then probably over Soutra hill to Coldstream, a distance of 48 miles. Two days later, on 19th August, they were followed by more guns, making a total of 17 in all.
